What to Expect at your first periodontal appointment
Your first visit begins when you schedule your initial appointment. Most of our patients come to us by referrals, whether from their general dentist, other dental specialists, or a friend or family member. When scheduling an appointment, you will be asked the reason for your referral to help us determine what type of initial appointment you will need.
If you do not have a referral, our practice is still more than happy to see you! Our front office staff will assist you in scheduling the correct appointment type. Unless you request otherwise, we will contact your general dentist regarding your treatment needs and history and to obtain available diagnostic records prior to your first visit. Our goal is to never take an unnecessary x-ray on our patients. We live by the belief that coordinated care is the best care.
All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Comprehensive Evaluation
Your initial appointment will be relaxed and easy going. Your doctor will either examine the specific area of concern or complete a comprehensive periodontal exam, depending on the reason for your visit. Digital radiographs may be recommended and taken but only if truly needed.
Treatment Plan
We will discuss our findings with you and present all available treatment options. We will also communicate our findings and recommendations to your general dentist, typically within minutes after your appointment. Our goal is to make your first experience in our office efficient, helpful, and pleasant. We take the time to answer your questions and make sure you fully understand your condition and the proposed next steps.
For some patients, treatment may begin the same day. For others, additional planning or coordination with your general dentist may be needed before treatment begins.
